Anomalous Left Superior Pulmonary Vein Drainage (Variant Anatomy)
[...]. Anomalous Left Superior Pulmonary Vein Drainage (Variant Anatomy). CTICases. Published September 30, 2016. https://str-case-explorer.pages.dev/c/2agup
Imaging findings
A CT scan (coronal view) reveals an unusual drainage pattern of the left superior pulmonary vein, entering the atrium medial to the left atrial appendage and right over the top of the atrium. A small branch from the right middle lobe also appears to enter the roof of the atrium.
Key takeaways
Awareness of anatomical variants in pulmonary vein drainage is important to avoid misinterpretation. A left superior pulmonary vein draining unusually medially, superiorly, or with small accessory branches entering the atrial roof are curiosities but generally benign if isolated. Such 'goofy' veins are important to recognize as normal variants.
