Mixed germ cell tumor
[...]. Mixed germ cell tumor. CTICases. Published August 31, 2018. https://str-case-explorer.pages.dev/c/g5z47
Imaging findings
Chest CT in a 20-year-old male shows a large, heterogeneous anterior mediastinal mass containing macroscopic fat, calcifications/ossifications, and infiltrative soft tissue, associated with a metastatic nodule in the left lower lobe. Serum alpha-fetoprotein and beta-HCG were elevated.
Key takeaways
In young males, mediastinal teratomas containing mature tissue elements must be distinguished from mixed malignant germ cell tumors containing immature or non-seminomatous elements. The latter are highly aggressive and require systemic chemotherapy followed by surgical resection.
