Iatrogenic hemopericardium
[...]. Iatrogenic hemopericardium. CTICases. Published September 21, 2018. https://str-case-explorer.pages.dev/c/vb29g
Imaging findings
CT scans obtained during and immediately after a CT-guided lung biopsy (for which an intentional iatrogenic pneumothorax was induced to access a juxta-cardiac nodule) show a new, large, high-attenuation pericardial effusion representing a hemopericardium, which was successfully treated with emergent scanner-side drain placement.
Key takeaways
Accidental puncture of the heart or pericardium during CT-guided lung biopsy of adjacent pulmonary nodules is a rare but life-threatening complication that can cause rapid hemopericardium and cardiac tamponade. Immediate recognition on the scanner and drainage are life-saving.
