Subaortic Membrane (Congenital Subaortic Stenosis)
[...]. Subaortic Membrane (Congenital Subaortic Stenosis). CTICases. Published July 15, 2021. https://str-case-explorer.pages.dev/c/wgfn5
Imaging findings
Cardiac MRI demonstrates a thin, fibrous subaortic membrane located within the left ventricular outflow tract, just proximal to the aortic valve. Velocity-encoded cine sequences show distinct, localized flow acceleration beginning at the level of the subaortic membrane, rather than at the aortic valve itself.
Key takeaways
A subaortic membrane is a form of congenital fixed subaortic stenosis that can cause progressive left ventricular outflow tract obstruction and secondary aortic insufficiency. Cardiac MRI is useful for identifying the thin membrane, which can be easily overlooked, and for assessing the exact site of flow acceleration.
