Papillary Fibroelastoma of the Aortic Valve
[...]. Papillary Fibroelastoma of the Aortic Valve. CTICases. Published February 1, 2017. https://str-case-explorer.pages.dev/c/2naa8
Imaging findings
Contrast-enhanced cardiac CT demonstrates a small (approximately 1 cm), mobile, hypoattenuating mass attached to the commissure between the left and right coronary cusps of the aortic valve. Brain CT angiogram shows a corresponding acute occlusion of the middle cerebral artery (MCA) with subsequent cerebral infarction.
Key takeaways
Papillary fibroelastomas are the most common benign tumors of the cardiac valves, most frequently affecting the aortic valve. Although histologically benign, they are highly mobile and have a high propensity for embolization, often presenting as acute ischemic strokes (such as MCA occlusions) even when small.
