Pancreatic Herniation causing Pancreatitis
[...]. Pancreatic Herniation causing Pancreatitis. CTICases. Published December 7, 2019. https://str-case-explorer.pages.dev/c/r77qn
Imaging findings
CT chest/abdomen shows herniation of the body and tail of the pancreas through a diaphragmatic defect into the left lower chest cavity. The herniated pancreatic tissue is constricted at the diaphragmatic neck. The patient has a childhood history of congenital diaphragmatic hernia.
Key takeaways
Herniation of the pancreas through a congenital or acquired diaphragmatic defect is extremely rare. Mechanical constriction of the pancreas at the neck of the diaphragmatic defect can cause local ischemia or ductal obstruction, presenting clinically as acute pancreatitis with elevated lipase.
